XOSTOR: Virtualization Storage Ledger 2026 Scorecard

XOSTOR packages LINSTOR and DRBD as the hyperconverged storage of XCP-ng 8.3, supported since June 2025 for pools of three to seven hosts.

    Snapshot

    • Type: product
    • Owner: Vates (Grenoble, France; founder-controlled; first outside funding of EUR 30 million from IRIS and Bpifrance announced 2026-10-06)
    • Engine: LINSTOR and DRBD from LINBIT, driven by the Vates LinstorSR storage driver in the XCP-ng storage manager (LGPL-2.1)
    • Licence: Commercial add-on of Vates VMS: XOSTOR Essential 2,400 per year (fixed, minimum three hosts, business days), Pro 800 per host per year, Enterprise 1,200 per host per year with 24/7 (price card read 2026-10-15, currency shown as both $ and euro); XCP-ng and Xen Orchestra are open source
    • Latest release: XCP-ng 8.3 LTS October 2026 Updates #1 (2026-10-05): automatic LINSTOR database backups, SR creation and RAW volume fixes; no XOSTOR version number is published
    • Support lifecycle: Supported only on up-to-date XCP-ng 8.3 pools; 8.3 LTS supported until 2028-11-30; XCP-ng 8.2 LTS ended 2025-09-16
    • Next milestone: XCP-ng 9.0 (no date); a next-generation platform covering storage, security and AI-related workloads funded in 2026-10, no dates
    • Hypervisors: XCP-ng 8.3 only, deployed and managed from Xen Orchestra (XOSTOR documentation, read 2026-10-15); platform-bound by design
    • Tier: Software-defined storage
    • Archetype: Dependable builder, young product
    • Evidence grade: B. The XOSTOR documentation, the XCP-ng release and lifecycle pages, the Vates price card and the funding and partner posts were read from Vates and XCP-ng sites. XOSTOR carries no version number of its own, so changes are dated by XCP-ng 8.3 update posts. Price history, the first public beta date and the LINSTOR and DRBD versions packaged were not found.

Scope of the scores: XOSTOR packages LINBIT's LINSTOR and DRBD (scored separately as linstor) for one hypervisor. The scores here cover what Vates ships and supports on XCP-ng 8.3, not the engine's wider capability. XOSTOR shipped as a beta in XCP-ng 8.3 (2024-10-07) and is scored from 2025, when Vates declared it supported (2025-06-16).

    Reading

XOSTOR scores as a young, narrow product: a supported way to get shared-nothing replicated storage on XCP-ng without a SAN, and little more. Resilience and operations are solid for its size, because DRBD quorum and Xen Orchestra deployment do the work, while data services, protocols, security and scale sit at the basic level with hard limits (2040 GiB per disk, three to seven hosts, no encryption at rest). Vates publishes its prices and dates and shipped the beta to supported status in eight months. A buyer should confirm that the VHD disk cap and the fixed replication factor fit their largest VMs before building a pool.

Open questions and items to re-score

    • First public XOSTOR beta date and the LINSTOR and DRBD versions packaged in XCP-ng 8.3 were not found.
    • The currency on the Vates price page is ambiguous and no price history was found.
    • Whether XOSTOR can be deployed without a Vates VMS subscription is not stated.
    • LINBIT says XCP-ng clusters can reach 31 nodes; the XCP-ng documentation says seven hosts per XOSTOR pool.
    • QCOW2 and larger disks on XOSTOR are not announced; TWINSTOR is a separate tech preview without a date.
    • Xen Orchestra Terraform and Ansible support and self-service were not re-verified for this edition.
