XCP-ng with Xen Orchestra: VM Platform Ledger 2026 Scorecard
XCP-ng with Xen Orchestra has some of the best backup and DR in the field and low lock-in, but the hypervisor moves slowly and still lacks vGPU.
Part of the VM Platform Ledger (edition 2026-09-30). How the scores work: methodology.
Snapshot
- Type: product
- Owner: Vates (private, France; funding round reported in progress)

AI say-do, 2023 to 2026: 5 AI items announced; 2 GA, 1 still preview, 2 pending, 0 dropped. NVIDIA vGPU has never been promised on any roadmap revision.
Vates shipped one of the first official MCP servers for a hypervisor, with sensible guardrails, but has nothing for AI workloads: no NVIDIA vGPU and a deprecated AMD path. The MCP server is admin-only and its kill switch can be bypassed by third-party clients.
Reading
Vates turned the open-source fork of XenServer into a credible VMware alternative mainly through Xen Orchestra: backup and DR are among the best in the field, and VMware migration no longer needs Broadcom's VDDK. The hypervisor itself moves slowly (no vGPU, hot-add or host Secure Boot yet, items stuck since 2022), and the public roadmap has been left to go stale. Low lock-in and open source make it a safe bet for classic virtualization; it is not a GPU or Kubernetes platform yet.
Open questions and items to re-score
- NVIDIA vGPU is unsupported and not on any roadmap revision.
- The XCP-ng roadmap page was retired in Sep 2026 and the live Vates roadmap is partly out of date.
- XCP-ng 9 (Alma 10 base) has no date; 8.3 runs on a CentOS 7 base with backported fixes.
- Funding round reported by the CEO, not confirmed closed.
