Platform9 Private Cloud Director: VM Platform Ledger 2026 Scorecard

Platform9 turned OpenStack into a simple private cloud with the best migration tool in this batch, but built-in backup is thin and the vendor is small.

Edition September 30, 20268 min read

Part of the VM Platform Ledger (edition 2026-09-30). How the scores work: methodology.

    Snapshot

    • Type: product
    • Owner: Platform9 Systems (venture-funded, about USD 99M raised, last round 2021)
    • Engine: OpenStack (Nova, Neutron/OVN, Cinder) on KVM, SaaS or self-hosted management plane
    • Licence: Subscription per core (no list price); free Community Edition for one region
    • Latest release: Release 2026.8 (Aug 2026); vJailbreak v0.5.0, 2026-09-29
    • Next milestone: Kubernetes roadmap only (1.34, bring-your-own-host); BGP leaves early access
    • Archetype: Fast opportunist on an OpenStack core
    • Evidence grade: B. All 16 PCD release notes read (A); the 2019 and 2022 snapshots rest on archived marketing pages (B/C).

Scope of the scores: Scored as Platform9's VM offering: managed OpenStack (PMO) before October 2024, Private Cloud Director since.

AI say-do, 2023 to 2026: 6 AI items announced; 4 GA, 0 still preview, 1 pending, 0 dropped. One more was framed as AI without an AI feature behind it.

Platform9's AI is GPU infrastructure only, and that part moved quickly in 2026 with vGPU live migration. There is no AI stack, operator assistant or agent interface.

    Reading

Platform9 repackaged OpenStack as a simple private cloud for VMware leavers in 2024 and has shipped at a high pace since, with the best migration tool in this batch and strong multi-tenancy. Weak spots are built-in data protection (the docs' backup page still reads 'TBD'), a short support window that forces regular control-plane moves, and a small company with no public funding since 2021. vJailbreak's licence and the removal of its source in September 2026 are worth watching.

Open questions and items to re-score

    • No built-in VM backup; DR relies on third parties, and stretched clusters are documented as not DR.
    • Releases reach end of life four versions behind; plan for regular upgrades.
    • vJailbreak is source-available (BSL 1.1), and its repository was emptied on 2026-09-12; vendor texts disagree on whether it needs VDDK.
    • Gartner Visionary placement is a vendor claim.
