HPE Morpheus VM Essentials: VM Platform Ledger 2026 Scorecard

HPE VM Essentials moved fast for VMware leavers, with SDN, stretched clusters and better backup, but it is young, lacks vGPU and tiers many features.

Edition September 30, 20268 min read

Part of the VM Platform Ledger (edition 2026-09-30). How the scores work: methodology.

    Snapshot

    • Type: product
    • Owner: Hewlett Packard Enterprise (Morpheus Data acquired Aug 2024)
    • Engine: KVM on Ubuntu (HVM clusters) managed by Morpheus
    • Licence: Subscription per HVM socket (about USD 600 to 742 a year); one binary, features unlocked by tier (Essentials / Advanced / Enterprise)
    • Latest release: 9.0.1, Jul 2026 (9.0.2 manual Aug 2026)
    • Next milestone: vGPU 'in future releases'; Morpheus Central on-premises; GreenLake Intelligence integrations through 2027
    • Archetype: Opportunist with a portfolio pull
    • Evidence grade: B. Release notes 8.0.6 to 9.0.1 read from HPE's support API (A); some 2026 items only through secondary coverage (B).

Scope of the scores: Scored for the VM Essentials tier. Kubernetes, multi-tenancy and IaC tasks exist in the higher Morpheus tiers and are scored as unavailable here.

AI say-do, 2023 to 2026: 10 AI items announced; 3 GA, 1 still preview, 4 pending, 0 dropped. Two more have no outcome found; the 'preview' is one partly shipped item.

HPE added an MCP server and AI agents directly into the management layer in 9.0, earlier than most rivals, but sells them by tier. For AI workloads VME has passthrough only; HPE's AI platform is a separate product.

    Reading

HPE built VM Essentials to catch VMware leavers on HPE (and other) hardware, and it has moved fast: SDN, stretched clusters, two-node sites and better backup all arrived on time in 9.0. The product is young, cold-only for migration until Zerto, and without vGPU; many features, including the AI ones, sit in higher-priced tiers. It suits HPE-centric buyers who want one vendor for hardware, storage and virtualization.

Open questions and items to re-score

    • No vGPU support yet; the qualification matrix says 'future releases'.
    • Kubernetes, multi-tenancy and Terraform are not in the Essentials tier.
    • 9.0.2 release notes not found; Advanced and Enterprise prices not public.
    • Gartner Challenger placement and 'half a million cores' are HPE claims.
