VM Platform Ledger 2026: 15 Platforms Scored
Fifteen virtualization platforms scored on capability since 2015, credibility, buyer risk, lock-in and AI, using public release records only.
Reports in this series
How the VM Platform Ledger scores virtualization platforms: fixed anchors, public evidence only, no vendor briefings, and a twice-yearly say-do check.
HPE VM Essentials moved fast for VMware leavers, with SDN, stretched clusters and better backup, but it is young, lacks vGPU and tiers many features.
KubeVirt runs the most disciplined public process in the field, near 80% say-do, but Red Hat writes most commits and its release pace binds every product.
Hyper-V is capable and low risk but barely developed; Azure Local gets the investment, is still catching up on basics and ties the cluster to Azure.
Nutanix is removing every reason VMware customers give for staying. Capability and credibility are high; the catch is another proprietary control plane.
OLVM is oVirt with Oracle support: fine for classic virtualization and Oracle Database licensing, but its upstream lost Red Hat and it seldom leads.
Platform9 turned OpenStack into a simple private cloud with the best migration tool in this batch, but built-in backup is thin and the vendor is small.
Proxmox builds what its users have been asking for, in the order it can afford to, and the VMware exit pulled several of those items forward.
OpenShift Virtualization leads on Kubernetes and has closed most of the VMware parity list, but vGPU live migration and incremental backup still lag.
Scale has built simple HCI for thousands of small sites for a decade: the strongest pick for edge fleets and MSPs, but weak on networking and Kubernetes.
Spectro Cloud focuses on moving vSphere VMs onto KubeVirt. Kubernetes and fleet management are strong; its VM features trail the other KubeVirt platforms.
SUSE packages KubeVirt, Longhorn and Rancher with the field's most detailed roadmap, but much ships as experimental and data protection is weak.
VergeOS puts compute, storage, networking and nested tenants in one OS, a strong fit for service providers, though proprietary and from a small vendor.
VMware is still the capability reference in seven of ten domains, but its roadmap now pushes buyers into the full bundle, and the renewal is the real risk.
XCP-ng with Xen Orchestra has some of the best backup and DR in the field and low lock-in, but the hypervisor moves slowly and still lacks vGPU.
XenServer is a Citrix add-on again: strong for GPU-accelerated VDI, behind on SDN, Kubernetes and storage, and best for buyers who already run Citrix.

n/a: the product did not exist yet that year, or the score does not apply (KubeVirt is an open-source engine with nothing to buy, so it has no commercial risk score).
