StarWind VSAN: Virtualization Storage Ledger 2026 Scorecard

StarWind VSAN is the two and three node synchronous mirror for small sites, now DataCore owned, with NVMe-oF, Proxmox and XCP-ng support added in 2026.

Where StarWind VSAN put its effort, 2016 to 2026

Each square is one capability area in one year. The brighter it is, the more the area gained in the Virtualization Storage Ledger that year; 1, 2 and 3 mark that year's biggest pushes.

Biggest pushes overall: Performance and protocols (+1), Hypervisor integration (+1), Data services core (+0.5). Already strong in 2015: Hardware and deployment freedom, Resilience and HA, Hypervisor integration.

Top focus each year: 2022 Resilience and HA; 2023 Data services core; 2024 Hardware and deployment freedom; 2026 Performance and protocols. 7 of 11 years show no gain in any area.

    Snapshot

    • Type: product
    • Owner: DataCore Software (Fort Lauderdale, USA; private, growth-equity backed); acquisition of StarWind Software announced 2025-05-21, terms undisclosed
    • Licence: Commercial, closed source; priced per usable TB by quote; term licence is the default, perpetual licences only for US federal customers; free edition and 30-day trial with registration
    • Latest release: V8 build 20104, CVM 20260918 (2026-09-18): Debian 13.7 base with an offline node-by-node migration from Ubuntu or CentOS appliances
    • Support lifecycle: No published support window or end-of-support policy; support and updates run with the term licence
    • Next milestone: DataCore's Data Freedom Platform control plane is due to add StarWind in summer 2027 at the earliest (vendor statement to press, 2026-10-07); no dated StarWind-only milestone
    • Hypervisors: vSphere 8.0 or later, Windows Server 2019 or later (Hyper-V), oVirt, OLVM and RHV 4.4 or later, Proxmox VE 9.1 or later, XCP-ng 8.3 or later (StarWind system requirements page, read 2026-10-15); no Nutanix AHV or KubeVirt platforms
    • Tier: Software-defined storage
    • Archetype: Dependable builder under new ownership
    • Evidence grade: B. The DataCore acquisition and the Vates validation were read from vendor press releases. Release notes, pricing, system requirements and the Proxmox guide are StarWind's own pages read through a text mirror after the site blocked automated access, graded B. Builds before 2021 are not on the public release notes page, so the 2015 state is held flat until the first dated change (grade C for those years). Data services, data protection and security rest on feature lists without dated release notes.

AI say-do, 2023 to 2026: 2 AI items announced; 0 GA, 0 still preview, 2 pending, 0 dropped. Both items are DataCore's: the AI-enabled management layer targeted for fall 2025 and the agent control plane that is to reach StarWind in 2027.

StarWind has no AI of its own; the AI promises come from DataCore and have not reached the product. The control plane with an agent layer is in preview for other DataCore products and is not expected for StarWind before summer 2027.

    Reading

StarWind scores where small sites need it: a synchronous two or three node mirror that now serves vSphere, Hyper-V, oVirt, Proxmox VE and XCP-ng, with NVMe-oF added in 2026. It loses points on data services, security and data protection, partly because the product lacks them and partly because the public record does not document them; the evidence grade says so. The commercial picture changed more than the product in 2025: a new owner, term licences by default and a roadmap that merges StarWind into a platform due in 2027. A buyer should check the licence terms offered today against the perpetual contract they may hold.

    • Limits of the free edition (nodes, capacity, hypervisors) are not stated on the pricing page.
    • No support or end-of-support policy is published; the date perpetual licences stopped is unknown.
    • Whether snapshots, compression, deduplication and encryption at rest exist in the current build is undocumented in the pages read.
    • Customer count differs by source (63,800 against about 2,000); not used for scoring.
    • Support for Nutanix AHV and KubeVirt platforms was not found.
