OpenShift ODF: Virtualization Storage Ledger 2026 Scorecard

Ceph packaged as an OpenShift operator for OpenShift Virtualization only: strong VM-level DR, short support windows, and no life outside OpenShift.

Edition October 16, 20268 min read

Where OpenShift Data Foundation put its effort, 2021 to 2026

Each square is one capability area in one year. The brighter it is, the more the area gained in the Virtualization Storage Ledger that year; 1, 2 and 3 mark that year's biggest pushes.

Biggest pushes overall: Hypervisor integration (+2), Data protection and DR (+1.5), Resilience and HA (+1). Already strong in 2020: Kubernetes and containers, Data services core, Resilience and HA.

Top focus each year: 2023 Hypervisor integration; 2024 Data services core; 2025 Hypervisor integration; 2026 Resilience and HA. 2 of 6 years show no gain in any area.

    Snapshot

    • Type: product
    • Owner: Red Hat, Inc. (IBM subsidiary). The ODF, Ceph and Gluster development teams moved to the IBM Storage business on 2023-01-01; ODF is still sold, documented and supported under the Red Hat name
    • Engine: Ceph (Red Hat Ceph Storage build) through the Rook operator and ceph-csi, plus NooBaa for the Multicloud Object Gateway
    • Licence: Subscription: OpenShift Platform Plus, OpenShift Data Foundation Essentials or OpenShift Data Foundation Advanced (lifecycle page); the product page still says Platform Plus only; metric and edition differences are in a subscription guide PDF dated 2026-10-06 that could not be read; upstream Rook, Ceph and NooBaa are open source; no free tier for the product
    • Latest release: 4.22 (GA 2026-07-09); 4.21 (2026-03-09); 4.20 (2025-11-18)
    • Support lifecycle: Platform aligned with OpenShift: 4.22 full support to 2027-02-11, maintenance to 2027-12-31, EUS to 2028-06-30 and EUS Term 2 to 2029-06-30; 4.21 full support ends 2026-10-09 (about seven months), no EUS; EUS on even-numbered releases only
    • Next milestone: 4.21 full support ends 2026-10-09; no date published for 4.23
    • Hypervisors: OpenShift Virtualization (KubeVirt) only, through ReadWriteMany block PVCs for live migration, automatic default StorageClass detection (4.14 release notes) and per-VM DR (4.19 to 4.21 release notes); cannot serve VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox VE or XCP-ng
    • Tier: Ceph family
    • Archetype: Dependable builder
    • Evidence grade: B. The lifecycle table and the release-note headings for 4.14, 4.16 and 4.18 to 4.22 were read from access.redhat.com and docs.redhat.com. Feature descriptions rest on those headings, not on the body text. Pricing and edition differences are in a subscription guide PDF that could not be read. Release notes for 4.10 to 4.13, 4.15 and 4.17 were not read, so the 2020 to 2022 steps are held at the first documented state.

Scope of the scores: ODF is the storage of one platform. Hypervisor integration is scored for depth on OpenShift Virtualization and capped at 4 by the series rule for single-hypervisor products; breadth is absent by design.

AI say-do, 2023 to 2026: 2 AI items announced; 1 GA, 1 still preview, 0 pending, 0 dropped. S3 Vectors shipped as a feature in 4.22; the Lightspeed integration has been a technology preview since 4.21.

ODF's AI so far is S3 Vectors on the object gateway and a preview link to OpenShift Lightspeed; neither changes how the storage is run. Agents reach it through the Kubernetes API like any operator, which is a documented interface rather than a purpose-built one.

    Reading

ODF scores well on the things a KubeVirt estate needs and nothing else: Kubernetes-native management, Regional and Metro DR, per-VM failover through RHACM, and two-node fencing since 4.22. Erasure coding reached GA only in July 2026, there is no NVMe/TCP, iSCSI or SMB for anything outside the cluster, and the product cannot serve a second hypervisor. The lifecycle is the cost that buyers underestimate: full support runs about seven months on odd releases and the whole thing moves on the OpenShift calendar. Check the subscription guide before signing, because Red Hat's own pages disagree on whether stand-alone editions exist.
