SANsymphony: Virtualization Storage Ledger 2026 Scorecard

SANsymphony is the long-running storage virtualization layer on Windows Server hosts, with metro mirroring, immutability since PSP21 and NVMe-oF since 2026.

Where SANsymphony put its effort, 2016 to 2026

Each square is one capability area in one year. The brighter it is, the more the area gained in the Virtualization Storage Ledger that year; 1, 2 and 3 mark that year's biggest pushes.

    Snapshot

    • Type: product
    • Owner: DataCore Software Corporation (Fort Lauderdale, USA; private, founded 1998; US$60 million financing led by Vistara Growth announced 2024-07-16)
    • Licence: Commercial; four editions metered per managed TB; term licences of 1, 3 or 5 years with Premier Support included; perpetual no longer sold per a reseller page of 2026-04-28; no free tier
    • Latest release: 10.0 PSP22 (GA 2026-08-31 on the support site; 2026-09-01 on the upgrade-path page) with Windows Integration Kit 4.1.7 and vCenter plug-in 3.12
    • Support lifecycle: No published window per PSP; a published upgrade-path table (PSP20 to PSP22 direct, older versions step through); versions before 10.0 PSP13 unsupported; Windows Server 2012 R2 dropped after PSP15 Update 3 (2023-06-12)
    • Next milestone: Data Freedom Platform agent control plane in preview, GA expected early 2027 (vendor statement to press, 2026-10-07); DAISY assistant webinar 2026-11-04; no next PSP date
    • Hypervisors: VMware vSphere (VASA provider, vCenter plug-in, NVMe/TCP since PSP22), Microsoft Hyper-V (Windows Integration Kit), Proxmox VE 8.x and 9.2 (storage plug-in 1.1.0 with iSCSI and NVMe/TCP), XCP-ng over iSCSI and FC (validated with Vates 2026-06-22), OpenStack Cinder (DataCore hypervisor integration pages); no Nutanix AHV or KubeVirt platforms
    • Tier: Software-defined storage
    • Archetype: Dependable builder, slow on dates
    • Evidence grade: B. Versions, GA dates and the upgrade-path table were read from DataCore's support site, the What's New pages for PSP18 to PSP22 and the Proxmox plug-in documentation. PSP release dates before PSP22 are not printed in the documentation, so steps carry the year only. Pricing rests on a 2019 trade article and a reseller list from 2026-04-28. Features without a dated release note (capacity optimization, auto-tiering, QoS) are dated to their first documented mention and otherwise held flat.

AI say-do, 2023 to 2026: 3 AI items announced; 0 GA, 1 still preview, 2 pending, 0 dropped. The 2024 financing promised AI integration without a product; the fall 2025 AI management layer became the Data Freedom Platform preview; the DAISY assistant has a webinar date and no GA statement.

SANsymphony's shipped AI is analytics: telemetry-driven alerts and a bottleneck prediction feature that DataCore describes as machine learning. The agent control plane and the DAISY assistant are preview or announcement material, with GA promised for early 2027.

    Reading

SANsymphony earns the highest capability score in this group on the strength of a mature mirror model: metro-distance synchronous mirroring, three-way mirrors since PSP20, immutability since PSP21 and NVMe-oF to Proxmox, Linux and ESXi in 2026. Its two structural costs are unchanged: storage nodes run Windows Server, and the pool format is DataCore's, so leaving means moving VMs rather than disks. Commercial risk rose with the move to term-only licences and an owner that is folding five acquisitions into one platform on a slipping schedule. A buyer should get the PSP support window and the Windows Server licence cost in writing, since neither is published.

Open questions and items to re-score

    • Release dates for PSP18 to PSP21 are not printed in the documentation; steps carry the year only.
    • The date perpetual licences stopped and DataCore's current shareholders are not on the record.
    • Maximum servers per group and virtual disk limits were not read.
    • NVMe over FC to ESXi is experimental in PSP22; re-score when it is supported.
    • DAISY assistant GA status and the Data Freedom Platform GA date (early 2027) are pending.
    • Whether a SANsymphony CSI driver exists was not found; Puls8 is a separate product.
