Chef: Infrastructure Automation Ledger 2026 Scorecard

Chef converges fleets well; Progress is retiring the free server (EOL November 2026) and gating every download, so Chef 360 or Cinc is the next decision.

Where Chef put its effort, 2016 to 2026

Each square is one capability area in one year. The brighter it is, the more the area gained in the Infrastructure Automation Ledger that year; 1, 2 and 3 mark that year's biggest pushes.

    • Licence: free key for non-production use, 30-day trial, commercial per node for production; prices not published
    • Latest release: Infra Client 19.4.46 (2026-10-14); Chef 360 Platform 1.7.3 (2026-08-04); Automate 4.13.520 (2026-08-27)
    • Support lifecycle: Infra Client 19 is LTS; 18.x end of life 2027-08-31; open source Infra Server 15 end of life 2026-11-30; Automate deprecated 2026-11-01, end of life 2027-11-30; Supermarket deprecated 2026-08-01, end of life 2027-05-31
    • Next milestone: Infra Server open source code freeze at the end of October 2026 and end of life in November 2026, with Chef 360 named as the replacement
    • Targets: Linux and Windows hosts by agent, plus agentless Target mode (AIX and Solaris only this way in 19); knife-vcenter and kitchen-vcenter documented for vSphere (maintainer and last release not found); no vendor-maintained plugin for Proxmox VE, Nutanix, Hyper-V, XCP-ng or KubeVirt
    • Tier: Configuration management
    • Archetype: Platform consolidator, forced moves
    • Evidence grade: B. Lifecycle dates, licence terms and release notes were read from chef.io and docs.chef.io, the Infra Client tags from GitHub. The 2020 acquisition and the 2016 Automate launch come from secondary sources. No prices are published.

Chef has no generally available AI feature. The assistant announced in May 2026 is an invite-only beta on the SaaS edition, and there is no official MCP server, so the only agent path is the REST API.

    Reading

Chef still converges Linux and Windows fleets as well as any tool here, and Infra Client 19 added agentless Target mode and a Habitat build. The buyer-facing story since late 2025 is the retirement of everything that was free to run: the open source Infra Server stops in November 2026, Supermarket and Automate are deprecated, and every official download needs a licence key. Chef 360 is the replacement, sold per node without published prices. A buyer should decide before November 2026 whether the server moves to Chef 360 or to the Cinc Server fork, because the cookbooks run on either.

Open questions and items to re-score

    • Chef 360 prices, and whether it requires Infra Client 19 or supports 18.
    • GA date of the Chef AI Assistant (beta since 2026-05-12).
    • Date of the Chef Marketplace that replaces Supermarket.
    • Maintainer and last release of knife-vcenter and kitchen-vcenter.
    • Whether Infra Client 19 FIPS mode is fully supported; the changelog shows testing in 19.2.12.
    • No sourced 2023 item was found, so the direction table starts in 2024.
