IBM COS on-prem: Object Storage Ledger 2026 Scorecard

IBM COS on-prem keeps Cleversafe's dispersed erasure coding and compliance-mode Object Lock; its recent release record is thin, so it is not ranked.

Edition October 16, 20267 min read

Where IBM COS put its effort, 2016 to 2026

Each square is one capability area in one year. The brighter it is, the more the area gained in the Object Storage Ledger that year; 1, 2 and 3 mark that year's biggest pushes.

Biggest pushes overall: Immutability and compliance (+3), Protocols beyond S3 (+1), Lifecycle and tiering (+1). Already strong in 2015: Durability and resilience, Performance and scale, Security and multi-tenancy.

Top focus each year: 2019 Protocols beyond S3; 2021 Lifecycle and tiering; 2023 Immutability and compliance. 8 of 11 years show no gain in any area.

    Snapshot

    • Type: product
    • Owner: IBM (listed, USA); Cleversafe acquired by IBM in 2015 (background, grade C); no ownership change since 2023; IBM also sells IBM Storage Ceph for object storage since the Red Hat storage teams joined IBM (target 2023-01-01), and no IBM statement on the future of COS was found
    • Licence: Commercial; perpetual, subscription or consumption licences (Redpaper); IBM appliances or IBM-certified x86 servers from IBM, HPE, Seagate, Cisco, Dell, Lenovo and QCT; no on-premises price found (the IBM Cloud service price is a different product)
    • Latest release: ClevOS 3.20.0 (documentation published, release date not found; listed on IBM's lifecycle page by 2026-05-19); 3.19.0 and 3.19.1 named in a support alert last modified 2025-02-19
    • Support lifecycle: Continuous Delivery model since ClevOS 3.16.0 with a longer-term release option (lifecycle page abstract); end of support dates behind an IBM login
    • Next milestone: none published
    • Object lock: S3 Object Lock since ClevOS 3.17.2 (2023) in compliance mode only; the release notes state "Governance mode is not supported"; legal hold API calls documented; lock enabled at system level, then per container vault; behaviour in 3.20.0 not read. Veeam Ready Repository (Capacity Target) with immutability on ClevOS 3.17.2.11 and 3.17.5.57 (Veeam article 465, modified 2023-12-05), IAM and STS not supported. The Redpaper lists Spectrum Protect, Commvault, NetBackup, Rubrik, Veeam and Cohesity as validated applications without an Object Lock statement. IBM claims support for SEC 17a-4(f) (vendor); no Cohasset assessment found
    • Tier: Appliance or hardware-bound
    • Archetype: Slow follower
    • Evidence grade: B. The ClevOS 3.17.2 release notes PDF, the Redpaper REDP-5537-02, the 3.20.0 documentation index, the Veeam Ready listing (article 465) and the abstracts of IBM's support lifecycle page (modified 2026-05-19) and a support alert (modified 2025-02-19) were read directly. Release notes for 3.18 to 3.20 were not readable (one 3.18.4 copy on Scribd, undated), so everything after 2023 rests on titles and abstracts; history before 2019 is grade C.

Not ranked: Inclusion test 1 not confirmed: no dated release since 2025-10-15 found (checked 2026-10-16)

Scope of the scores: The on-premises IBM Cloud Object Storage System, sold as IBM appliances or as software on IBM-certified x86 servers. The IBM Cloud service with One-Rate pricing is a separate product and is not scored. The entry is not ranked until a dated ClevOS release since 2025-10-15 is found.

    Reading

IBM COS keeps the durability design Cleversafe built: objects are encrypted and dispersed as slices across nodes and sites, so no single node holds all the data, and that earns a 4.5. The rest of the record is thin for 2024 to 2026, because current release notes are not public and the newest items found are an observability feature and removals. Object Lock covers compliance mode only, and the only Veeam test is on ClevOS 3.17. A buyer should ask IBM for the 3.19 and 3.20 release dates, the Object Lock modes in 3.20, and whether new object deployments are being steered to IBM Storage Ceph.

Open questions and items to re-score

    • ClevOS 3.19.0 and 3.20.0 release dates, needed to rank the product (inclusion test 1).
    • Object Lock behaviour in 3.20.0: whether governance mode was added after 3.17.2.
    • End of support dates per version on the login-gated lifecycle page.
    • S3 feature matrix: bucket policies, presigned URLs, SSE-C, lifecycle transitions.
    • A Veeam listing for a newer ClevOS release and for Veeam 13.
    • External KMS and FIPS validation status.
    • Release that introduced the Swift API and object expiration (2019 and 2021 steps, grade C).
    • Price, and whether IBM steers new object buyers to IBM Storage Ceph.
