    Checkmk: Monitoring Ledger 2026

Checkmk has the cleanest delivery record here and Proxmox monitoring since 2021, but flow analysis still leans on ntopng and config backup is missing.

Edition October 4, 20266 min read

Part of the Infrastructure Monitoring Ledger (edition 2026-10-04). How the scores work: methodology.

    Snapshot

    • Tier: Challenger
    • Owner: Checkmk GmbH, Munich (formerly tribe29 GmbH and Mathias Kettner GmbH); PSG Equity growth investment since 2025-02
    • Licence model: Open-core: Community under GPLv2 free; Pro and Ultimate as per-host annual subscriptions; Multi-Tenancy add-on by quote
    • Products scored: Checkmk 2.5 self-hosted editions (Community, Pro, Ultimate, Ultimate with Multi-Tenancy); Checkmk Cloud SaaS not scored
    • Latest release: 2.5.0, 2026-04-28; patch 2.5.0p14 current at cutoff
    • Next signal: Checkmk 3.0: in-core NetFlow/sFlow/IPFIX, Orbvis maps, Views 3.0, incident clustering, SAML across sites; no date stated
    • Archetype: Open-core platform, steady shipper
    • Evidence grade: A. Release dates, werks, live roadmap and pricing read from primary sources; the AI evidence and the research record disagree on the MCP server status.

    Reading

Checkmk is turning a Nagios-born monitoring core into a broader observability platform, adding synthetic tests, OpenTelemetry, a Relay for segmented networks and an MCP server. Its record is the cleanest in this group: yearly majors, a public roadmap and almost every promise shipped at the stated version, with Proxmox monitoring in place since 2021. The trade-offs are flow analysis that still leans on ntopng, no configuration backup for network devices, and a new private-equity investor whose influence is not yet visible.

    Open questions and evidence caveats

    • The AI evidence lists the MCP server as a community preview; the research record cites Checkmk's own blog for an official GA release in 2.5.0p13. Scored on the research record.
    • Server high availability and metrics-per-second figures are not in the research, which limits the collect score.
    • PSG Equity invested in 2025; pricing and edition changes since then are limited to the 2026 rename.
