What's next for sysadmins and infrastructure engineers, 2027 to 2029
Part of a 14-post series on IT jobs in the AI era. Start with the overview: IT job market 2022 to 2026: openings fell, jobs held.
The ai-era-it-jobs report forecasts, with high confidence, that the US will employ between 300,000 and 315,000 network and computer systems administrators in May 2027, against 314,340 in May 2025 [the ai-era-it-jobs report, 2026]. That is a slow decline. The faster movement is next door: UK job ads with the title "Platform Engineer" went from 217 to 667 in a year [IT Jobs Watch, 2026]. This post carries the measured trends forward to 2029, names five places where infrastructure people will find work, and lists the skills to add and the ones to stop leading with. Every projection below is either a forecast from the report or a mechanical extension of a measured trend, and I label which.
Where the role stands in October 2026
Three numbers describe it. US sysadmin employment fell 3.6 % between May 2022 and May 2025, from 325,930 to 314,340 [BLS OEWS, 2025]. Indeed's index of IT operations and helpdesk postings stood at 46 in the UK and 70 in the US in September 2026, against 100 in February 2020 [Indeed Hiring Lab via FRED, 2026]. And the work moved to new titles: platform engineer titles on tech-company job boards doubled from 2.5 to 5.0 per 1,000 job pages between late 2022 and 2026 [company job pages, 2026].
The trend lines to 2029

If the 2022-to-2025 rate of decline continues, US sysadmin employment reaches about 306,800 in 2027 and 299,500 in 2029. If it follows the BLS ten-year projection instead, it reaches about 311,700 and 309,100. Both are mechanical extensions of measured trends [the ai-era-it-jobs report, 2026]. The report's own forecasts are these:
- US sysadmins in May 2027: 300,000 to 315,000, with high confidence. An OEWS count at or below 316,000 for May 2026 would confirm it.
- US sysadmins and DBAs in May 2029: at or below 305,000 and 65,000, with medium confidence.
- UK IT-operations postings stay below 50 through 2027, with high confidence. A monthly mean above 52 by June 2027 would prove it wrong.
- UK platform and AIOps ads keep rising, with medium confidence.
- Most firms keep human approval for agent-made infrastructure changes, and fully automated patching stays below 40 % in admin surveys, with medium confidence.
- Data-centre and GPU-cluster jobs keep growing to 2029, with medium-low confidence, because that forecast rests on company spending guidance [the ai-era-it-jobs report, 2026].
Five openings for the next one to three years

- Platform engineering. Besides the tripling of UK ads, the phrase "platform engineering" appears in 18.0 % of infrastructure job pages, up from 4.1 % [ai-era-it-jobs study, 2026]. UK platform engineer ads paid a median of £80,000 in 2026, against £45,000 for systems administrators [IT Jobs Watch, 2026].
- AI and ML infrastructure. Titles such as "AI platform engineer" and "ML infrastructure" rose from 0.8 to 3.4 per 1,000 tech-company job pages, and 100 companies posted at least one in 2026 [company job pages, 2026]. UK ads naming AIOps rose from 17 to 109 in a year, at a median of £87,500 [IT Jobs Watch, 2026].
- The architect seat. Every occupation next door that BLS expects to grow by more than 5 % pays more than a sysadmin. Network architects earn a US median of $134,050 with BLS projecting 7.7 % growth, and database architects $139,500 with 9.4 %, against $99,130 and a projected 4.1 % decline for sysadmins [BLS OEWS, 2025; BLS Employment Projections, 2026]. Security analysts grow fastest at 21 %, but the report scores that family's entry door 1 out of 5, the hardest [the ai-era-it-jobs report, 2026].
- Migration and recovery work at service providers. In a January 2026 survey, 86 % of large North American firms were shrinking their VMware footprint and only 4 % had finished [CloudBolt, 2026]. Of 29 backup and storage jobs I found in Europe in September 2026, 23 were posted by outsourcers, integrators or recruiters [own LinkedIn sample, 2026].
- The right market and contract. US IT-operations postings rose 6 % in the twelve months to September 2026 while the UK fell 19 % and Germany 17 % [Indeed Hiring Lab via FRED, 2026]. In Poland, the most frequently offered salary for a cloud engineer on an employment contract rose from 17,000 to 21,000 PLN a month between the 2022 and 2025 Hays reports, while a Windows Server admin moved from 15,000 to 16,000 [Hays Poland, 2025]. The report expects Poland's ICT workforce to reach at least 790,000 in 2027, with medium-low confidence [the ai-era-it-jobs report, 2026].
Skills to add in the next 12 months, and what to stop leading with

The non-AI skills to add are the incident and platform vocabulary. Observability went from 18.6 % to 35.1 % of infrastructure job pages, incident response from 3.8 % to 17.4 %, post-mortems from 6.2 % to 16.9 % and identity and access management from 4.4 % to 13.9 %. FinOps went from 1.2 % to 7.4 % [ai-era-it-jobs study, 2026].
On AI, the ask is growing faster than the practice. AI appears inside the requirements section of 46 % of infrastructure job pages, up from 6 % [the ai-era-it-jobs report, 2026]. Yet admins report only 16 % of patching automated, against the 67 % they expected [Action1, 2026], and Gartner expects only 15 % of AI agents to be fully autonomous within seven years [Gartner, 2025]. The useful AI skills are therefore the ones that keep a human in charge. Learn to review machine-written Terraform and scripts, and to set the approval gates and rollbacks that agents work inside.
Stop leading with the things employers now assume or no longer use. Docker fell from 29.5 % to 16.3 % of pages, although the share of Stack Overflow survey respondents using it rose from 69.3 % to 74.2 % [Stack Overflow survey, 2025]. Keep it in the skills list and out of the headline. The word "DevOps" fell from 39.2 % to 26.1 %, and Puppet, Chef and Salt from 10.3 % to 5.0 % [ai-era-it-jobs study, 2026]. A CV built only on VMware is the riskiest: UK ads naming VMware are still 32 % below 2024 [IT Jobs Watch, 2026].
Three indicators to watch in 2027
- The BLS employment count for May 2026, due in spring 2027. Sysadmins at or below 316,000 confirm the slow decline.
- The UK IT-operations postings index. A monthly mean above 52 by June 2027 would mean the market turned and the forecast was too gloomy.
- Action1's 2027 admin survey. Patching automation below 25 % means agents still read more than they act, and the senior admin's seat stays safe.
A 90-day plan
In the first month, rewrite your CV around outcomes: the incidents you ran, the recovery times you hit and the platform you built, and drop Docker and "DevOps" from the headline. In the second month, add one observable service to your work or home lab, with OpenTelemetry traces, an SLO and a written post-mortem for one failure. In the third month, apply for platform, infrastructure or cloud engineer roles, and include at least one service provider running VMware exits if you come from virtualisation or backup.
