The sysadmin job in 2026: shrunk by cloud and VMware, not by AI (yet)

    October 31, 2026
    8 min read

Part of a 14-post series on IT jobs in the AI era. Start with the overview: IT job market 2022 to 2026: openings fell, jobs held.

The United States employed 325,930 network and computer systems administrators in May 2022 and 314,340 in May 2025 [BLS OEWS, 2025]. That is 3.6 % fewer in three years. Between October 2022 and September 2026, job ads for IT operations and helpdesk work fell by half in the US and by 70 % in the UK [Indeed Hiring Lab via FRED, 2026]. I spent fifteen years selling servers, storage and backup to the people in these jobs, and the data tells a different story from the vendor keynotes. The rate cycle, cloud and Broadcom's VMware licensing thinned the sysadmin job first. AI came later, and so far it has mostly taken over the tasks juniors used to learn on.

The jobs leaked slowly while the ads fell fast

The hands-on infrastructure occupations lost people between 2022 and 2025. The occupations one layer up gained them.

Database administrators fell from 80,520 to 69,990, down 13.1 %. Network support specialists fell 13.5 %. Database architects grew 7.5 % and network architects 3.3 % [BLS OEWS, 2025], so the work shifted from running databases and networks toward designing them.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects systems administrator employment to fall another 4.1 % over ten years [BLS Employment Projections, 2026]. It gives three reasons, none of them AI: developers doing DevOps take over admin tasks, firms buy networks as a service, and admins automate their own routine work [BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2026].

Indeed's IT operations and helpdesk index (February 2020 = 100) stood at 138 in the US and 153 in the UK in October 2022. A year later it was 88 and 95 [Indeed Hiring Lab via FRED, 2026]. In both countries the biggest one-year fall of the whole period came in 2023, before any tool could read a log file for you. That was the end of pandemic over-hiring and the interest-rate cycle. From 2025 the countries split. In the twelve months to September 2026 the US index rose 6 % to 70, while the UK fell 19 % to 46 and Germany 17 % to 65. Helpdesk roles sit in the same index, so part of the UK fall is first-line support (post 04 covers that).

Broadcom did more to virtualisation admins than AI did

Broadcom closed its VMware purchase on 22 November 2023 and stopped selling perpetual licences on 11 December [Techzine, 2024]. In the UK, permanent job ads naming VMware fell from 2,073 in the six months to October 2024 to 1,174 a year later. In 2026 they recovered to 1,407, still 32 % below 2024, while ads naming DevOps went from 5,132 to 5,806 over the same two years [IT Jobs Watch, 2026]. In a January 2026 survey of 302 large North American companies, 86 % said they were cutting their VMware footprint. Only 4 % had moved off it completely [CloudBolt, 2026].

In my backup years, the VMware admin owned the cluster, the backup proxies and often the storage zoning as well. When a customer unwinds vSphere one workload at a time, that job turns into a migration project. When the migration ends, the job tends to end with it. That decline comes from licensing, and anyone who reads it as an AI effect will misread the market.

The title moved before the work did

Start-ups stopped writing "DevOps" and started writing "platform engineer".

The share of Hacker News hiring posts that name DevOps fell from 10.9 % in late 2022 to 6.0 % in 2026. "Platform engineer" doubled from 2.2 % to 4.3 %, and SRE fell from 5.2 % to 3.0 %. "Sysadmin" stayed under 1 % in every year, because start-ups rarely post for that title [Hacker News via Algolia, 2026]. The UK market shows the same move. "Platform Engineer" ads tripled in a year, from 217 to 667. The 552 "Systems Administrator" ads paid a median of £45,000, down from £50,000 in 2024, while platform engineers got £80,000 [IT Jobs Watch, 2026].

AI titles came next. In a sample of 359 European infrastructure postings from September and October 2026, "AI platform engineer" was the second most common title after "DevOps engineer". The sample leans toward AI-related searches, so the share overstates the market, but the titles are real [own LinkedIn sample, 2026].

Poland shows the gap in pay. Hays Poland's most frequently offered monthly salary for a Windows Server administrator went from 15,000 to 16,000 PLN gross between its 2022 and 2025 reports. A DevOps engineer went from 17,000 to 20,000 and a cloud engineer from 17,000 to 21,000 [Hays Poland, 2025]. The gap between a Windows admin and a cloud engineer grew from 2,000 to 5,000 PLN a month, while Poland's ICT workforce grew from 645,000 to 779,000 between 2022 and 2025 [Eurostat, 2026].

Job ads now ask for incident work

On the same companies' job pages, infrastructure ads dropped the tools a junior learns first and added the work that happens at 3 a.m.

Docker fell from 29.5 % to 16.3 % of pages and the word "DevOps" from 39.2 % to 26.1 %. Observability rose from 18.6 % to 35.1 %, incident response from 3.8 % to 17.4 % and platform engineering from 4.1 % to 18.0 %. The median minimum experience asked went from four years to five [ai-era-it-jobs study, 2026]. Docker is still everywhere. The share of Stack Overflow survey respondents who use it rose from 69.3 % in 2022 to 74.2 % in 2025 [Stack Overflow survey, 2025], so employers seem to assume it now and leave it out of the ad.

AI in these ads depends on where you look. Inside the requirements section of infrastructure job pages, mostly at tech companies, AI went from 6 % in 2022-23 to 46 % in 2026 [company job pages, 2026]. In the wider UK market, the skills table for 1,553 "DevOps Engineer" ads in six months lists no AI skill at all [IT Jobs Watch, 2026].

The "yet" in the title comes from the automation numbers. In 2024, sysadmins surveyed by Action1 expected 83 % of log analysis to be fully automated by 2026. In 2026, 50 % is. They expected 67 % of patching to be automated and 16 % is [Action1 via Infosecurity Magazine, 2026]. The machine took over the reading and the human kept the changes. Reading logs and drafting the first script were how juniors learned this job, and that is where AI cuts now, while the senior who decides what to change keeps the seat.

What this means if you are a sysadmin

    1. Change your title before the market changes it for you. Infrastructure, platform or cloud engineer with Terraform, Kubernetes and one cloud is the 2026 baseline. In the UK a platform engineer earns £35,000 more at the median than a systems administrator.
    2. Make incidents your specialty. Observability, incident response and post-mortems rose most in job ads. Volunteer for on-call design, write the post-mortems and put both on your CV. Agents can read the alerts, but somebody still has to decide what to change.
    3. If you run VMware or backup, become the person who owns the exit and the recovery. With 86 % of large firms shrinking their VMware estate, someone has to plan the migration and prove afterwards that restores still work, including restores of changes made by automation.
